Rachid Boulmane's existence is an explosion of life, diverse talents and creativity. He grew up in a colorful Marrakech in Morocco as the only boy in the family with three sisters. Rachid was destined from childhood to follow tradition and take over his father's restaurant, thereby reproducing the expected version of the male role in an Arab country.
It didn't turn out that way at all. Rachid was a rebellious soul and shocked by, among other things, taking his sisters to a disco and subsequently making sure they attended the music conservatory, something he himself was not allowed to do. From his early years he was in opposition to dictatorship, oppression of women, injustice, religion and double standard mentality in general. Especially abandoned street children called out to his heart, and voluntary work with orphans took a lot of his time and energy for many years.
His beliefs took concrete form early on. Creativity flowed from him in drawings, paintings, poems, songs and music. Art became a language of freedom that could contain and express both his pain, joy and everything in between.
Only 8 years old, Rachid went to the market with his modest savings and surprised a seller by eagerly asking for western music. He happily brought home a cassette tape with Michael Jackson: I'm bad. Thus new forms of dance had entered the boy's life. Western culture became synonymous with freedom, smiles, ecstasy, feelings of happiness, the unlimited possibilities of life. He made his first painting at the age of 15, the first exhibition at the age of 19 in the cultural house Hay Hassani, Marrakesh.
HE DANCES HIS PICTURES TO LIFE
By Izabella Schou, author and photographer
I have known Rachid Boulmane for many years in connection with several artistic projects. Coming to photograph for an artist portrait of Rachid is a very special experience every time. You simply must keep the camera ready for anything, as it is quite impossible to predict whether he is painting by the lake, whether he is jumping into the water, rolling in the paint or cutting holes in the canvas to express what is moving in him. His spontaneity and ability to be in the moment is completely and utterly guiding the sessions we have had. At first, he can seem silly and light-hearted. He kind of is too, he's just crazy serious while being crazy. In addition, he possesses the rare quality of having 100% confidence in his spontaneity and intuition. He is always deeply connected to the possibilities of the present.
Crazy is a word he uses with a big laugh about himself while he multilingually speaks 7 languages, is multi-talented, multi-creative and quite modest at the same time. It's not something he talks about. He just owns his creative power and expressiveness with the same naturalness as he breathes. Lightheartedness and humor always find their way into the spaces in which he moves.
He is impulsive, dances, plays music, makes puppet shows, sings, models, writes songs and poems and generally enriches the world in countless ways.
